A Commitment to the "Whole Child"

A commitment to children to be assessed on “the whole child’ concept, I believe is absolutely necessary.  It is important to consider every child’s physical, moral, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects during educational instruction.  Every school, community, classroom, educator, student, and family has unique challenges and strengths, and has a role to play in ensuring that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Collectively we have the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet these challenges and share these strengths (http://www.ascd.org/whole-child.aspx).
.               The United States and Canada both support the “whole child’ approach.  They are taking the initiative to create programs that are essential to the educators learn, teach, and lead.
             It is important to give children the tools necessary to be confident and self-aware.  As passionate teachers, we are able to guide children using a balance educational approach to ensure every child is supported physically, socially, and emotionally.

  2. We as educators do need to assess the child with a holistic approach. Measurement and assessment is a controversial issue particularly in elementary schools in the U.S. It is not whether or not a child or areas of child development need to be assessed (as questioned in our assignment) but rather how children are assessed and supported in academic achievement. We do need to be able to understand the child and how to provide that individualization in their learning.

    I agree with the 'whole' child approach to education. One part cannot properly function without all the other parts wherein functioning properly as well. If a child is struggling with a family issue - of course they would likely struggle in school for the duration of that issue(s). Having good open door relationships with parents of one's students , in my opinion , will lessen the duration of the presenting issues. Thus bringing the optimal educational experience for the children . Great post !

  4. I certainly agree with th whole child also. We as teacher and child educator have to consider the whole child. If we don't nobody else will.
